Blessings in My Life
What blessings do you currently have in your life that you can trace back to Joseph Smith's prayer in the Sacred Grove?
I chose to answer with a massage slant since that is what I spend so much of my time doing.
At this phase in my life, I am immersed in learning more about the human body. I have always been fascinated by the miracle that our bodies are. When I have been injured or had surgeries, I have been fascinated by how our bodies heal. I have learned that taking care of my body by eating real food, getting rest, and moving throughout the day keep me healthy. We learn about these truths in the Word of Wisdom and other revealed scriptures. When I feel well, I am better able to serve my God by helping my family, my neighbors, and my friends. When I am in pain, my focus turns to myself and I become quite grumpy. I don’t like to take a lot of time from my day focusing on my body. For example, I would be happy with a bald head so that I wouldn’t have to deal with hair and styles. I don’t like to spend time exercising. Instead, I try to add movement into my everyday life (that was easier in the days before so many of my tasks were on the computer). As much as I don’t like to spend time on myself, I have learned that I do need to spend some time staying healthy. Christ took care of people’s physical needs and healed their pains. He knew that they couldn’t hear his message unless some of those needs were met. He fed the people with the fishes and loaves of bread before he taught the Beatitudes. He healed their wounds and then taught them.
Knowing that pain-free bodies allow us to better serve our God is what drives me to learn more about massage and eating real food. If I can help relieve others’ pains, I feel that I am serving God. I like it when someone tells me that they no longer have pain, that their pain is reduced, that they have better range of motion, or that they can sleep better. Because we live in a mortal world, I recognize that pain will never disappear. But if I can help someone learn how to better care for their body and I can help them heal from injuries, and live with less pain, then I am thrilled.
Although I enjoy helping others feel better, the best thing about being a massage therapist is the one-on-one time I have with family and friends. When I went back to school to become licensed, I had no idea that I would be so blessed to develop and deepen relationships with people I love through massage. Although I have been married nearly 25 years, I really did not know my sister-in-laws well. In the past two years I have finally developed relationships with three of my sister-in-laws as I have massaged them after they were injured or had surgery. I have also massaged several nieces and nephews who were recovering from injuries. As I work with them, we discuss what they are studying, life, family, and I have loved getting to know them better. The past two years I have spent a few hours every week with my mother-in-law. We run errands, clean her house, work on family history, and often I give her a massage. I have so enjoyed my time getting to know her better. The absolute best is when I get to massage my immediate family! Unfortunately, I am tired in the evenings when they are home, and so they don’t get as many massages as they want, or that I desire to give them. I don’t like the restraints of time and fatigue.
Many people ask my opinion about different health care practices and different modalities of massage. I think that they all have value. I think that they all have parts of the truth in understanding how to help heal our bodies. But none have the complete truth. If we can integrate and use different practices, from western medicine, to essential oils, to homeopathy, to any modality of massage, to any other complementary medicine, we can combine more truth. Joseph Smith restored the Gospel step by step. I feel that our understanding of health is the same. We are learning step by step about our bodies and how to heal them. None of the ways are the full truth or the only answer. Someday we will have the whole truth about how our bodies work.
As I work with people, I always try to rely on the Spirit to direct me how to best help them. I have learned many different massage modalities, yet am never sure which one is best with a specific body at that time. I always begin a massage session with a private prayer and have frequent prayers throughout the session in hopes of being guided to best help. I am grateful for inspiration. Without the restoration of the Gospel, we would not have the gift of the Holy Ghost to constantly assist us in our lives.
