Piriformis Syndrome

Emails from a Client

Piriformis Syndrome is a name given to a complex of symptoms arising from the compression of the sciatic nerve and/or associated blood vessels by the piriformis muscle. The piriformis muscle is located in the buttock region. The most common symptoms of piriformis syndrome are pain and paresthesia in the buttock and down the back of the thigh. The pain is commonly felt when sitting, climbing stairs (or hills), squatting, running, cycling, or stretching too aggressively.

Recently a client visited me who had been diagnosed with piriformis syndrome. She had suffered from it for eight years and had given up running every day and sometimes still had pain as she walked. The pain often interrupted her sleep. I massaged her twice and following are a few emails that she sent to me about how wonderful she felt afterwards. She has given me permission to share them. (I bolded parts of her letters which highlight the benefits of massage.)

First Report

Hi Heidi!

First off I have to thank you again! I can't believe the difference in how my legs feel. Does it make sense if I say my legs feel relaxed? It's the best word I can think of. My left leg feels unbelievably good although there is still a hint of stiffness in my right leg. Not a lot though but if I'm going to compare legs there is a slight difference. But the right leg is always more stiff and this is still such an improvement. I definitely slept better last night and this morning when I woke up I wasn't stiff. [My husband] noticed immediately and [my walking partner] noticed also when I bent down to tie my shoe. Funny huh? Right now I don't even have a hint of pain which really makes me happy. I realize that I'm conscious that the pain could come and automatically take precautions. I didn't fully realize I do that but this morning it's obviously different.

I'll keep you posted and let me know if there's anything I should try and be aware of. This is just great. I like feeling good!

Have a great day!
Becky M.

A week later she began to experience a little pain, so scheduled a second massage. After that appointment, she wrote two emails:

Hi!

I just wanted to let you know that once again you have worked your magic. I feel so much better! I slept better again and my legs feel relaxed and I've had no pain at all today. This really works! The inside of my leg feels great too. I'll continue to do my stretches like you said and I won't be afraid to use heat if I need to. But for now all is well. Thank you again! You are a good friend.

Update
15 October 2014
Hello again!

I just wanted to update you on my status. I feel great! I haven't had any problems at all. My right leg is a little more stiff than my left leg but I think it's just always going to be. It's still so much better! I've continued to do my stretches and I can tell that my muscles aren't nearly as tight as they were. I have good mobility and absolutely no pain. This is great! Thanks again.

When I saw her ten days later, she said that she was feeling great - that she still had no pain! She hoped that maybe it was a permanent change! But even if she has to come in for an occasional "tune-up," at least she knows there is relief from the pain. She wished that she had known eight years ago that massage could help so much.

If you are suffering from piriformis syndrome or sciatica, book a massage and see if you can also find relief!

Three Months Later. . .

I ran into Becky and she said that she still has no pains caused by her piriformis! She and I are both amazed that two massages took the pain away that she had been dealing with for eight years. Something so simple and non-invasive had just dramatic results!
